Not stopping there, in his next appearance he won
the Arnold Palmer Invitational for the fifth time and
had everyone wondering if this streak would ever
end. Finally, at the WGC—CA Championship the
stretch was subsided, even though he had won the
event six times before, the last time at Doral in 2007.
He won there twice before, when it was still the Ford
Championship. While it’s impossible to look forward
with any certainty after this run, it is easy to look
back and it’s not hard to agree with him.
In 2007 Tiger played in 16 events and won seven,
including his 13th major title. He didn’t play in The
Barclays, the first FedExCup playoff event, falling to
fourth in the FedExCup standings. The following
week, he finished second, his third runner-up of the
year (the other two were in majors). After that, it was
as if the playoffs were scripted. He won in Chicago
with a record 22-under-par total and then an eightstroke
victory in Atlanta finished it off. No one could
catch him. He averaged 65.75 strokes in the 12
rounds he played during the playoffs. It was like
Grant through Richmond. As anticipated, he won the
inaugural FedExCup.
“The man is a freak of nature,” Zach Johnson told
reporters on Sunday after Tiger Woods won THE
TOUR Championship last year. “I mean, he’s a normal
person but he’s so not normal.”
How good was Woods in 2007? For starters, he went a
combined 59-under-par in his last 12 tournament
rounds. His adjusted scoring average for the season
was 67.79, topping the TOUR stat by a whopping 1.50
strokes.
