Vincent Publishing - IndexVincent Publishing - 2008 Northern Trust Open - Index“The man is a freak of nature,” Zach Johnson told reporters
the Sunday after Tiger Woods’ win at THE TOUR
Championship. “I mean, he’s a normal person but he’s so not
normal.”
How good was Woods in 2007? For starters, he went a combined
59-under-par in his last 12 tournament rounds. His adjusted
scoring average for the season was 67.79, topping the
TOUR stat by a whopping 1.50 strokes. That’s an average.
Woods ended his season with four wins in his last five starts.
His win at East Lake was his seventh of the season and career
victory No. 61, leaving him one victory shy of Palmer’s 62
career wins. At 31, Woods is the youngest player to reach
61 wins.
He has 13 major championships to his name and, at this
pace, appears destined to pass Nicklaus’ all-time mark of 18.
Woods has won two majors in each of the past three seasons;
the exception was this year, when he won one. Nicklaus’
mark won’t be broken, it’ll be splintered.

Grabbing for the brass ring
As we have come to expect, Woods began the year chasing
history, but this time it was a record that couldn’t be reached.
This time.
Woods came into his first appearance of the season with six
consecutive PGA TOUR victories dating back to the 2006
British Open.
His choice of starting points was well thought out, beginning
his 2007 campaign and rewriting history at the Buick
Invitational. In 10 appearances there, he has 10 top-10s,
including nine top-fives and seven top-threes, and won the
event five times. Woods successfully defended that title and it
was the fifth time in his 11-year career that he won in his first
start of the season.
His victory in San Diego was his seventh in a row, the first time
in his career that Woods accomplished that feat. In 1999-
2000, he won six consecutive starts beginning with the 1999
TOUR Championship.
